Social Studies/Humanities
7th grade
--Honors World Studies--Eastern Hemisphere
Students will study the the geography, history, economics, cultures, and current
events of the major regions of the Eastern Hemisphere and discover how these
factors are interrelated. An integral part of the I/B program is the development
of a global perspective; students will begin to consider other the points of
view of other nations.
8th grade
--Honors United States History I
This class deals with the history of this country from the colonial period
through Reconstruction. While learning facts is important, the students will
focus on the concepts of time, cause and effect, continuity and change,
and similarity and difference. They will realize the value of learning about
the past for its own sake.
9th grade
--Honors United States History II
Beginning with Reconstruction, students will examine our history
through the present. As ninth graders, they must be prepared to evaluate the
past and
analyze the interpretation of history by others; students will learn to ask
questions.
10th grade
--Honors World Government and Economics
Students will examine the structure and function of world governments and
their economic systems and compare them with those of the United States.
The economic
content of this course includes the U.S. market system, supply and demand,
and the role of government in the economy.
--Psychology
A one semester elective, psychology introduces students to the concept
of personality. It will become apparent that this social science
is, in fact, a science, one that deals with human development and behavior,
learning and memory, intelligence, biology, and genetics.
Grades 7 - 12
--Interactive Communications and Simulations (ICS)
Although this dynamic program will
vary each semester,
the class will consistently utilize both telecommunications and web-mediated
communication. Taught in collaboration with the University of Michigan, ICS
offers projects like Place out of Time, Michigan Student Caucus, the
Arab-Israeli Conflict Simulation,
International Poetry Guild, and China Earth Odyssey.
