Science
7th
grade:
--Physical science is the focus in this class. Students study matter
and energy, subjects which encompass molecules, mixtures, physical and
chemical changes, heat-energy transfer, forces, motion of objects, simple
machines, and waves.
8th
grade:
--Students
explore earth science. Subjects studied are astronomy, meteorology, hydrology,
and geology and the effect each has on humans. They discuss, "Is there
a doomsday asteroid?" "Will we run out of fresh water?" "How will we
feed this overpopulated planet?" Students will realize the connection
between earth science and history, mythology, and literature.
9th
grade:
--Students
continue their exploration of physical science through the study of physics and
chemistry. Before enrolling in this class, they have had to successfully complete
8th grade earth science and algebra. Among the topics included in this class
are:
1. the nature of scientific inquiry; 2. understanding the motion of objects;
3.
Newton's
Laws; 4. forms and transformation of energy; and 5. chemical equations.
10th
grade:
--Biology
is the focus for our sophomores. These students will be introduced to heredity
and genetics; human systems; diseases and immunity; the life cycle and diseases;
evolution; the diversity of life; fossil records; the kingdom of life; invertebrate
morphology and collection; vertebrate collection; and chordates.
Health:
--Students
will understand and evaluate those six character traits so essential to their
well-being: responsibility; trustworthiness; respect; caring; fairness; and
citizenship. They will become conscious of the impact that these factors have
on both individuals and society
as a whole.
