About IB

Developed in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 to educate the children of globally mobile diplomats and foreign service employees, the International Baccalaureate curriculum had to fulfill the expectations of prep schools, colleges, and universities around the world. Although these mostly private schools originally catered to the wealthy, IB now places great importance on making its programs available to students of all backgrounds; today, many International Baccalaureate institutions are part of a public school system.

Whittier is now officially a candidate to establish a middle years Program (MYP) for grades 7-10. The curriculum consists of English/language arts, a second language, humanities (geography, U.S. history, government, etc.), technology, mathematics, the arts, science, and physical education. Each of these subjects is viewed through the five areas of interaction: approaches to learning; community & service; human ingenuity; the environment; and health & social education.

On April 14th and 15th, M.J. Caputo, an IB consultant, interviewed staff and students to evaluate Whittier's progress toward achieving IB status. A second meeting with Ms. Caputo will take place next school year.
